Rocker Arm Assembly Inspection

PROCEDURE

1. After removing the rocker arm assembly, it is advisable to disassemble it for a closer inspection of the components. Remove the mounting bolts and take the rocker arms and springs off the shafts. Mark the position of the shaft relative to the bearing caps.

Secure the primary and secondary intake valve rocker arms together with rubber bands. Keep removed components in the order of installation, as they must be installed in their exact original positions.

2. Thoroughly clean the components and check them for signs of wear and mechanical damage. Inspect the surfaces of the rocker arms that contact the camshaft, check the degree of wear and the freedom of rotation of the rollers. Check the rocker arm bores and shaft contact surfaces for scoring and excessive wear. Replace defective components. Make sure the oil passages inside the shafts are clear.

3. Remove the valve lash adjusters from their bores in the cylinder head and clean them thoroughly. Check that the plungers move freely by hand.
4. Check that the synchronizing pistons move freely in the intake valve actuation assemblies.
