Camshaft Inspection

PROCEDURE

1. Noting the installation order of the individual parts, disassemble the rocker arm assembly, then reinstall the rocker shafts with their components removed into their original positions in the cylinder head. Tighten the fasteners to the specified torque.

2. Mount a dial indicator so that its plunger contacts the end of the camshaft. Push the camshaft fully rearward (wrap the end of the lever with tape to prevent damage to the shaft's bearing surfaces), zero the dial indicator, then push the camshaft fully forward in the opposite direction. Read the dial indicator, record the result, and compare it with the camshaft end play specification (see Specifications). If the measured value is outside the allowable range, replace the camshaft.

3. After checking the end play, remove the rocker shafts, then remove the camshaft from the cylinder head. Measure the journal diameters and cam lobe height. Compare the measurements with the Specifications (V6 engines). Visually inspect the camshaft for wear, paying attention to scratches, scoring, pitting and signs of overheating.

Note the difference in cam lobe arrangement between the front and rear camshafts.
