Rear Crankshaft Seal Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the transmission (refer to Transmission Section) and the drive plate.
Support the engine from above using a hoist or an A-frame.

2. The seal can be replaced without first removing the oil pan and the seal retainer. However, note that the new seal has fairly stiff lips that can easily be damaged during installation. There is also a high probability that the seal will be pulled out of its bore when it is seated. The Engine General Overhaul section of this chapter describes special precautions to avoid such problems, but all of them require the oil pan and retainer plate to be removed first. If you choose to proceed, attempt to replace the seal in situ by prying the old seal out of its bore in the retainer with a screwdriver.

3. Lightly lubricate the edges of the journal and the lip of the new seal with universal grease, then, using a blunt tool to help, slide the seal onto the shaft. Using a drift and a hammer, drive the seal into the bore (spring side facing inward). A socket of the appropriate size, or a length of pipe of suitable diameter (slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal), can be used as a drift when installing the seal.
The seal must be installed flush with the surface of the holder.
4. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
