Oil Pan Installation
INSTALLATION
PROCEDURE
1. Carefully scrape all traces of sealant and old gasket material from the mating surfaces of the oil pan and block. Thoroughly wipe the mating surfaces with a rag moistened with acetone.
2. Clean and dry the threaded holes in the block.
3. Inspect the oil pickup assembly and check its screen for clear passage (see Section Oil Pump Removal, Inspection and Installation).
4. Place a new gasket on the mating surface of the oil pan.
5. Carefully press the oil pan against the block and start the fasteners. Tighten the fasteners to the required torque in three stages. Start tightening from the center toward the ends of the oil pan, alternating from one side to the other. Remember that overtightening the fasteners can lead to leaks.
6. Further assembly is performed in the reverse order of removal. Do not forget to add new oil and replace the oil filter (see Chapter Maintenance and Tune-Up).
If the oil pump has been replaced, do not fill the engine with oil until 20 minutes after assembly, to allow the sealant to set.
7. Fill the engine with engine oil (see Chapter Maintenance and Tune-Up), start the engine and check the oil pan for leaks.
