Replacement of Steering Gear Boots
PROCEDURE
1. Loosen the wheel nuts of the applicable wheel. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands. Remove the wheel.
2. Remove the tie rod end and its lock nut from the steering tie rod (refer to Removal and Installation of Steering Tie Rod Ends).

3. Cut and remove the bands securing the rubber steering gear boot using side cutters.
4. Before installing the new boot, wrap the threaded end of the steering tie rod with tape to prevent damaging the small lips of the boot when sliding it onto the rod.
5. Slide the new boot onto the rod and stretch it over the steering gear housing, making sure its sealing lips seat correctly in the groove. Secure the boot with new retaining bands.
6. Remove the tape and screw the tie rod end back on (refer to Removal and Installation of Steering Tie Rod Ends).
7. Install the wheel. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque (refer to Specifications in the Maintenance and Adjustment Chapter).
