PROCEDURE

1. Position the steering gear assembly in its original location and engage its input shaft with the intermediate steering shaft (make sure the alignment marks made during removal are matched).
2. Install the steering gear assembly mounting bolts (be sure to fit washers under the bolt heads) and tighten them to specification.
3. Install the reinforcement plates and tighten their mounting bolts to specification.
4. Connect the tie-rod ends to the steering knuckle (refer to Steering Wheel Removal and Installation).
5. Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and tighten it to specification.
6. Install the access cover to the universal joint. Make sure both retainers engage the matching holes in the floor panel.
7. Connect the PAS hydraulic lines to the steering gear housing. Fill the PAS reservoir with the required amount of fresh hydraulic fluid of the specified type (refer to Maintenance and Adjustments).
8. Install the wheels. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts to specification (refer to Specifications in Maintenance and Adjustments).
9. Bleed the power steering system (refer to Air Removal from the Power Steering Hydraulic System).
