Air Removal from the Power Steering Hydraulic System
PROCEDURE
1. After any procedure involving disconnection of power steering lines, air must be bled from the PAS hydraulic circuit. Otherwise, the effectiveness of the power steering will be significantly reduced.
2. Return the front wheels to the straight-ahead position and check the fluid level in the PAS reservoir (refer to Maintenance and Adjustments). If necessary, adjust the level (the fluid level should reach the lower [COLD] mark on the reservoir wall).
3. Start the engine and let it run at fast idle. Check the PAS reservoir fluid level again. If necessary, adjust again.
4. Turn the steering wheel from side to side (without striking the stops at the end of travel) to bleed air from the system (make sure the fluid level in the reservoir does not drop below the permissible limit during bleeding).
5. After bleeding, return the wheels to the straight-ahead position and let the engine run for a few more minutes, then turn it off.
6. Road test the vehicle, checking that the steering system operates correctly and quietly.
7. Check the hydraulic fluid level again with the engine at normal operating temperature (the level should now reach the HOT mark on the reservoir wall). If necessary, adjust the level (refer to Maintenance and Adjustments).
