Manual Transmission

The shift pattern is standard, as shown in the illustration. When shifting gears, depress the clutch pedal, then release it smoothly.
Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving, otherwise normal clutch operation may be impaired. Do not use gear engagement to hold the vehicle on a grade; use the parking brake instead.
Shifting up too early or downshifting too late will overload the engine and cause knocking.
Frequent shifting at maximum allowable speeds causes accelerated engine wear and increased fuel consumption.
Maximum allowable driving speeds
When merging onto a highway or passing slow-moving traffic, it may be necessary to drive at maximum speed in a given gear.
Always observe the following maximum speeds.

For 2E and 4E-FE engines

For 4A-FE engines

For 7A-FE engines

For 2C engines

* Do not downshift if the vehicle speed exceeds the maximum allowable speed for the next lower gear.

Driving Tips

If engaging reverse from neutral is difficult, release the clutch pedal momentarily and try again.
Do not engage 5th gear when towing a trailer, to avoid increasing the braking distance beyond normal.
