Tyre Care Tips

~1min read

In general, tyres have a "memory". Improper handling, for example driving quickly or frequently over kerbs or tram rails, often leads to tyre punctures much later.

Cleaning the tyres
  • Do not clean tyres with a steam jet cleaner if possible.

If the nozzle of the steam cleaner is held too close to the tyre, the rubber layer will be irreparably damaged within a few seconds, even when using cold water. A tyre cleaned in this way should be replaced as a precaution.

  • A tyre that has been in contact with oil or grease for a longer period must also be replaced. The tyre will swell at the affected areas, but later returns to its normal shape and looks undamaged on the outside. However, its load capacity is reduced.

Storing the tyres
  • Tyres should be stored in a cool, dark and dry place.

They must not come into contact with grease and oil.

  • Store wheels lying flat or hung from the rims in the garage or cellar.

  • Before removing the wheels, increase the tyre pressure slightly (approx. 0.3-0.5 bar).

  • Use separate rims for winter tyres, as refitting the tyres to the same rims is not cost-effective.

Running in new tyres

Due to the production process, new tyres have a particularly smooth surface. For this reason, new tyres must be run in, including the new spare wheel. During running in, the smooth surface becomes roughened by the onset of wear.

During the first 300 km, drive with new tyres with particular care, especially on wet roads.
