Tyre fault diagnosis

~1min read
Wear Cause
Excessive tyre wear on both shoulders of the tread. Tyre inflation pressure too low.
Excessive tyre wear in the centre of the tread, over the entire circumference. Tyre inflation pressure too high.
Scalloped wear on the tread block sides. Static and dynamic wheel imbalance. Possibly excessive lateral runout of the wheel rim, or excessive play in the wheel bearings or ball joints.
Scalloped wear in the centre of the tread pattern. Static wheel imbalance. Possibly a result of excessive radial runout.
Severe localised wear at individual points in the centre of the tread. Flat spots from emergency braking.
Cupped or saw-tooth wear of the tread. In severe cases, associated with ply separations that become visible on the outside after some time. Vehicle overloaded. Check the inside of the tyres for ply separations!
Rubber flaps on the lateral tread edges. Incorrect wheel alignment. Tyre scrubbed. On rear wheels, also check the condition of the shock absorbers!
Feathering on one side of the tread of the front wheel. Incorrect toe setting. Tyre scrubbed. Frequent driving on heavily crowned roads. Fast cornering.
Impact breaks in the tyre base. Initially visible only inside the tyre. Driving over sharp stones, rail joints and similar objects at high speed.
Tread worn on one side only. Check the camber setting.
