Description and Operation

Description

The GDI injector is basically similar to a conventional injector, but injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber at much higher pressure and is equipped with a swirl disc that imparts rotation to the fuel as it exits the nozzle. This allows finer fuel atomization. The ECM controls both the power supply circuits (high side) to supply voltage to the fuel injectors, and the ground circuits (low side) to activate the fuel injectors. Each pair of injectors is supplied by the same set of drivers. Since the ignition coils are paired with the cylinders (1-4 and 2-3), the fuel injectors are also paired.

repair procedures

TEST

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the injector connector.

  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the injector.

  4. Make sure the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: 1.5 ± 0.075 [20 °C]

expansion

  1. Release the residual pressure in the fuel line.

(Refer to Fuel Delivery - "Relieve Residual Pressure in the Fuel Line").

  2. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  3. Remove the fuel rail and injector.

(Refer to Fuel System - "Delivery Line")

  4. Disconnect the connector (A), then disconnect the fuel injector (B) from the fuel line.

Installation

  1. injector O-ring

  2. rubber washer

  3. backup ring

  4. O-ring

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

The injector O-ring must be removed after the injector is removed. Replace it with a new one to prevent leakage.

  1. Remove the O-ring (A) using side cutters.

  2. Before installing the O-ring, clean the groove with a clean cloth. Make sure it is free of debris.

Using a brass wire brush, remove the sealant residue from the sealing surface of the injector.

  3. Place the seal installation guide (B) (SST No.: 09353-2B000) on the injector tip without damaging the injector tip (A).

Using your thumb and index finger, press the O-ring (C) over the tapered installation tool until it fits into the groove.

The entire assembly should not take more than 2-3 seconds.

  4. To determine the size of the O-ring, first place the injector in the calibration tool (A) (SST No.: 09353-2B000), then press and turn 180° at the same time in the size tool.

  5. Remove the injector from the tool by turning it in the opposite direction.

  6. Check the installation of the O-ring (A).

Troubleshooting

Signal

The three signal waveforms below were obtained from injectors No. 1 and No. 4. The upper curve is from the high-pressure side (supply side) of the fuel injectors No. 1 and No. 4. The center waveform is from the low (grounded) side of injector No. 1, and the waveform below refers to the low side of injector No. 4.

The middle waveform is identical to the upper waveform because the circuit is not connected to ground. Since no current flows, injector No. 1 is not activated and fuel is not injected.

In the waveform below, the circuit is grounded and shows a voltage drop across fuel injector No. 4. Since current is now flowing, injector No. 4 is activated and fuel is injected.
