Description and Operation

Description

The Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) system adjusts the valve timing of the intake and exhaust valves to advance or retard in accordance with the control signal from the ECM, which is calculated based on engine speed and load.

With Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), changing the valve overlap reduces fuel consumption and harmful emissions (NOx, HC). In addition, engine performance is improved by reducing pumping loss, providing an internal EGR effect, improving combustion stability, improving volumetric efficiency and increasing expansion work.

This system consists of the following:

- The CVVT Oil Control Valve (OCV) supplies oil to the camshaft phaser according to the control signal from the ECM. The ECM controls the oil flow by PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal.

- The camshaft phaser varies the camshaft timing by hydraulic force generated by the engine oil.

Engine oil flowing through the CVVT oil control valve moves the camshaft in the advance direction (intake advance / exhaust retard) or in the reverse direction (intake retard / exhaust advance) relative to engine rotation by rotating the rotor connected to the camshaft in the cam phaser.

repair procedures

TEST

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the OCV connector.

  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the OCV.

  4. Make sure the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: 6.9 ~ 7.9 [20 °C]

expansion

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  2. Disconnect the CVVT oil control valve connector (A).

  3. Remove the valve by loosening the fixing screw (B).

CVVT oil control valve bolt: 9.8~11.8 N·m
