Ignition lock and engine starting

~3min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

Ignition Lock

1 – зажигание выключено / двигатель не работает, может быть заперто рулевое колесоGasoline engines 1 – ignition off / engine not running, steering wheel may be locked 2 – ignition on* 3 – engine starting

*After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, wait approximately 5 seconds before starting the engine.

Diesel engines

1. fuel supply cut off / engine not running, steering wheel may be locked

2. ignition on position for glow plug preheating and subsequent driving. Do not switch on high-power electrical consumers during preheating so as not to overload the battery.

3. engine starting

Recommendations for all vehicles:

Position 1:

To lock the steering, remove the key from the lock and turn the steering wheel until it audibly engages. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the key can be turned to position 1 and removed only when the selector lever is in position “P”.

CAUTION

On vehicles with a manual gearbox, remove the key from the lock only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop. Otherwise, the steering may lock unintentionally.

Position 2:

If the key turns with difficulty or does not turn at all in this position, turn the steering wheel slightly to release the steering lock.

Position 3:

Before each subsequent engine start, return the ignition key to the position

1. The re-start lockout in the ignition lock prevents damage to the starter by preventing its pinion from engaging with the flywheel ring gear while the engine is running. Engine starting

General information

CAUTION

Running the engine in enclosed spaces creates a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning!

Before starting the engine, move the gear selector to the neutral position (automatic transmission selector lever to "P" or "N") and apply the parking brake.

On vehicles with a manual transmission, depress the clutch pedal when starting the engine so that the starter cranks only the engine. As soon as the engine starts, release the key – the starter must not remain engaged with the crankshaft.

After a cold start, the engine may run with increased noise for some time until the required oil pressure is established in the hydraulic valve lash adjuster system. This is normal and should not cause concern. Do not warm up the engine at idle! Drive off immediately!

Avoid high engine speeds and driving with the accelerator pedal fully depressed until the engine reaches operating temperature.

Do not tow a vehicle equipped with a catalytic converter to start the engine over a distance greater than 50 m*. Unburned fuel may enter the converter and damage it. *This does not apply to vehicles with a diesel engine.

Petrol engines

When starting a cold engine or an engine at operating temperature, do not press the accelerator pedal either before engaging the starter or while it is cranking.

If the engine does not start immediately, stop cranking after approximately 10 seconds and repeat the attempt after about half a minute. After starting a very hot engine, it may be necessary to press the accelerator pedal lightly.

Diesel engines

Glow Plug System

The engine is equipped with a glow plug system. The required preheating time is determined by the glow plug indicator lamp, which is connected to the coolant temperature sensor – refer to the subsection Instruments and Warning Systems and Diagnostic System.

Turn the ignition key to the position

2. With a cold engine, the glow plug indicator lamp illuminates, indicating that the engine glow plugs are switched on. It goes out when the ignition temperature is reached.

During glow plug preheating, do not switch on high-power electrical consumers, to avoid unnecessarily overloading the battery. When starting an engine at operating temperature, and at ambient temperatures above +8°C, the glow plug indicator lamp illuminates for approximately one second – the engine can be started immediately. Start the engine as soon as the indicator lamp goes out.

Do not press the accelerator pedal when starting the engine.

If individual combustion events occur, continue to keep the starter engaged for a few more seconds (no more than half a minute) until the engine runs on its own.

If the engine does not start, wait approximately half a minute, perform glow plug preheating again, and repeat the starting procedure as described above.
