Checking the coolant level

~1min read

Check the coolant level at regular intervals, about every four weeks, and at least before any longer journey.

For topping up, even in warm weather, use only a mixture of antifreeze/coolant concentrate and low-lime, clean water.

Note: to allow the vehicle to be driven, pure water can also be added, especially in summer.

The antifreeze concentration must then be corrected as soon as possible.

  • 1.8/2.0 L petrol engines and diesel engine: these engines have a separate expansion tank on the side of the wing. With the engine cold (coolant temperature approx. +20 °C), the coolant level must be between the MIN and MAX marks on the expansion tank. It must never drop below the MIN mark. B - Filler cap.

  • Only add cold coolant when the engine is cold, to avoid engine damage.

Caution: With the engine hot, first open the cap by only one turn so that the excess pressure can escape. Place a rag over the cap when opening. Only open the cap when the coolant temperature is below +90°C. Risk of scalding!
  • If the coolant level drops quickly, carry out a visual check for leaks.
