Power Windows - General Information and Operational Check
The power window control system consists of the control switches, power window motors, power window regulators, window lift mechanisms, and connecting wiring. The power window motors are located inside the vehicle door assemblies.
Power windows can be operated from the driver's seat using the master switch, or by using the individual door switches. Each window is equipped with a separate reversible drive motor. Pressing the switch rocker reverses the polarity of the motor connection and, as a result, its direction of rotation.
The circuit is protected by a fuse and a circuit breaker. Each motor is additionally equipped with an individual circuit breaker, which prevents the entire system from failing if a single window jams.
Power windows operate only with the ignition switched on. On many models, the rear door windows (and sometimes the front passenger window) can also be locked out from the master switch. Keep this function in mind when diagnosing power window faults.
These procedures are general in nature. If they do not clearly identify the cause of the malfunction, take the vehicle to a service station for more detailed diagnosis.
If a power window fails, always check the fuse and circuit breaker first.
If the rear door windows are operated only from the master switch, check the continuity of the lockout switch in the released position. Replace a faulty switch.
Check the wiring between the switches and the fuse junction block. Carry out any necessary repairs.
If only one window does not operate from the master switch, check whether that window operates from its individual switch.
This does not apply to the driver's door window.
If the same window operates correctly from its own switch, check the continuity of the switch.
If the switch is good, check the circuit between the suspected switch and the window motor for open and short circuits.
If the window does not operate from either switch, remove the interior trim panel from the door and check that power is supplied to both the switch and the regulator motor (with the switch in the appropriate position).

With power confirmed at the motor, disconnect the glass from the window regulator (refer to Body section) and move it up and down, checking for free movement. Also check the condition of the regulator. If the regulator is in good condition and the glass moves freely in both directions, replace the drive motor. If movement is not smooth, eliminate the interference, lubricate the moving parts, and replace any damaged components.
If power is not supplied to the motor, check the wiring between the switches and the motors for continuity (if necessary, refer to the wiring diagrams at the end of this Section). If the circuit is equipped with a relay, check that the relay is receiving power and that it is properly grounded.
After completing the necessary corrections, repeat the power window operation check.
