Airbags

General Information
All models covered in this Manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), better known as airbags. Two airbags are included as standard equipment. The system provides additional protection for the driver and front passenger in the event of a severe frontal impact.

Система состоит из блока SRS с включенными в него датчиком направленных перегрузок,

The system consists of the SRS unit, which includes the directional impact sensor, the safing sensor, the self-diagnostic circuit and the feedback circuit. The unit is located under the instrument panel, directly in front of the center console. The directional impact sensors and airbag modules are mounted in the center of the steering wheel and the right side of the instrument panel (directly above the glove box).

Operating Principle
The airbags are activated when the directional impact sensors and the safing sensor are triggered. Triggering of the sensors closes the module circuit and the airbags inflate instantly with gas. If the battery fails, the airbags are deployed by energy generated by the feedback circuit built into the SRS unit.
SRS Fault Self-Diagnosis
The SRS self-diagnostic system illuminates the warning lamp on the instrument cluster when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. If the system detects no faults, the lamp should go out after approximately 6 seconds. If the lamp does not go out, or illuminates while the vehicle is being driven, a fault is present in the SRS. To check the system and correct the cause of the fault, take the vehicle to a service station.
Servicing Components Located Near SRS Components
If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel, or to service the radio or other components located near the instrument panel, avoid disconnecting the SRS electrical connectors. Never connect any diagnostic equipment to the SRS circuit. WHEN SERVICING ANY COMPONENTS LOCATED NEAR THE AIRBAGS, ALWAYS DISABLE THE SRS FIRST. Note: SRS wiring can be easily identified by its bright yellow insulation.
Disabling the SRS
PROCEDURE

The SRS must be disabled every time service is performed on components located near the airbags!
Disconnect the negative battery cable first, then the positive cable.

If the vehicle's audio system is equipped with an anti-theft code, make sure you have the correct code to reactivate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
Driver Airbag
PROCEDURE

Remove the access cover located under the airbag module, then disconnect the 2-pin wiring connector between the airbag and the clockspring (see Suspension and Steering Chapter).

Passenger Airbag
PROCEDURE

1. Remove the glove box (see Body Chapter).

2. Рассоедините 2-контактный электрический разъем, расположенный между модулем

2. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector located between the passenger airbag module and the main SRS wiring harness.

SRS Activation
PROCEDURE

1. To reactivate the SRS after it has been disabled (to perform service on any components), connect the airbag module wiring to the 2-pin clockspring/main harness connector. Reinstall the cover/glove box.
2. Turn the ignition off.
3. Connect the battery (positive cable first, then negative).
