Instrument Cluster Gauge Functional Check

~1min read

The vehicles covered by this Manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Before performing any work near the airbag module, steering column or instrument panel, disconnect the SRS to avoid injury from accidental deployment (see Section Airbags - General Information). SRS wiring can be easily identified by its yellow insulation.

This procedure applies to analog-type gauges only.

Fuel and Engine Temperature Gauges

All checks listed below are performed with the ignition switched OFF (key in the OFF position).

If the gauge pointer remains constantly at zero (empty tank or cold engine), check the fuse. If the fuse is good, locate the connector of the corresponding sender (see Chapter Fuel System and Exhaust [fuel sender], or Chapter Cooling and Heating [temperature sender]). Using a jumper wire, ground the sender connector.

Briefly turn the ignition on by turning the key to the ON position. If the gauge pointer jumps, replace the sender. Otherwise, use a jumper wire to ground the sender terminal on the rear of the gauge. If the gauge pointer moves to the maximum position when the last terminal is grounded, the problem is a fault in the wiring between the gauge and the sender. If the pointer remains at zero, check the voltage at the second gauge terminal with the first terminal grounded. There should be no voltage; otherwise, replace the gauge.
