Description and Operation
Description
The Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) system advances or retards the exhaust valve timing according to the control signal from the ECM, which is calculated based on engine speed and load.
CVVT control provides valve overlap or underlap, which in turn improves fuel economy, reduces exhaust emissions (NOx, HC), and improves engine performance by reducing pumping losses, creating an internal exhaust gas recirculation effect, improving combustion stability, increasing volumetric efficiency, and increasing expansion work.
This system consists of the following:
- CVVT Oil Control Valve (OCV), which supplies engine oil to the cam phaser or shuts off engine oil to the cam phaser according to the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control signal from the ECM,
- and the Cam Phaser, which changes the camshaft phase using hydraulic pressure from the engine oil.
Engine oil flowing from the CVVT oil control valve changes the camshaft phase in the advance direction (intake advance / exhaust retard) or in the opposite direction (intake retard / exhaust advance) relative to engine rotation, by rotating the rotor connected to the camshaft inside the cam phaser.

Repair Procedures
Inspection
Coil Resistance
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the OCV connector.
Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the OCV.
Make sure the resistance is within specification.
Specification: 6.9–7.9 Ω [20 °C]
Valve Operation
Remove the oil control valve.
(Refer to CVVT Oil Control Valve - Removal)
Make sure the valve operates properly when battery voltage is applied to terminals 1 and 2 of the valve connector.
Specification: Operation
Removal
Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
Disconnect the CVVT oil control valve connector (A).
Loosen the installation bolt (B) and remove the valve from the engine.
CVVT oil control valve mounting bolt:
9,8–11.8 N·m
