Description and Operation
Description
The Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAPS) is a speed-density type sensor installed on the surge tank. It measures the absolute pressure of the surge tank and sends an analog signal proportional to the pressure to the ECM. Using this signal, the ECM calculates the intake air volume and engine speed.
The MAPS consists of a piezoelectric element and a hybrid IC that amplifies the element output signal. This silicon diaphragm type element is pressure sensitive. The semiconductor variable resistor effect is used. One side of the silicon diaphragm is under 100% vacuum, and manifold pressure is applied to the other side. Therefore, the output is obtained from the change in silicon proportional to the change in pressure.

Repair Procedures
Inspection
Connect the KDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Measure the MAPS output voltage at idle with the ignition switched ON.
Pressure
[kPa (kgf/cm², psi)]Output Voltage (V) [Vref=5V] 20,0 (0,20, 2,9) 0,79 46,7 (0,47, 6,77) 1,84 101,3 (1,03, 14,7) 4.0
Removal
Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
Remove the engine cover.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - Engine Cover)
Disconnect the MAP sensor connector (A).
Remove the mounting bolts (B) and remove the sensor from the intake manifold.
