Description and Operation
Description
Knock is a phenomenon characterized by undesirable vibration and noise that may cause engine damage. The Knock Sensor (KS) is installed on the cylinder block and detects engine knock.
When knock occurs, the vibration of the cylinder block is transmitted as pressure to the piezoelectric element, and the sensor outputs a voltage signal to the ECM. Upon receiving this signal, the ECM retards the ignition timing, and then advances it again once the knock disappears. This sequential control can improve engine output, torque and fuel economy.

Repair Procedures
Inspection
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the knock sensor connector.
Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the injector.
Make sure the resistance is within specification.
Specification: Approximately 4.87 MΩ [20 °C]
Removal
Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
Remove the intake manifold.
(Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Intake Manifold")
Remove the delivery pipe and injector assembly.
(Refer to Fuel Delivery System - Delivery Pipe.)
Remove the knock sensor (A) after loosening the mounting bolt from the cylinder block.
Knock Sensor Mounting Bolt:
18,6–24 N·m

Installation
Install in the reverse order of removal.
