Inspecting and Adjusting the Breaker Point Dwell Angle (Conventional Ignition System)

~1min read

PROCEDURE

The breaker point dwell angle (BPDA) is checked using a special tool. The BPDA must be within 47° ± 3°. If it differs, it must be adjusted: loosen the stationary contact mounting screws, insert a screwdriver into the slot of the stationary contact, and turn it to move the stationary contact away from or toward the movable contact until the BPDA matches the reading on the tool. Tighten the stationary contact mounting screws. If no special tool is available for adjusting the BPDA, the contact gap can be adjusted instead.
