Inspection
PROCEDURE
The drive pinion must not have nicks or broken teeth. Pinion teeth must not be worn. The pinion must turn freely on the overrunning clutch hub, but only in the direction of rotor rotation when starting the engine. Brushes in the brush holder must move freely without sticking. Minimum brush length is 13 mm. PROCEDURE 1. Check with a test lamp for a short circuit of the rotor winding to ground.Apply voltage through the lamp to the rotor shaft and commutator segments. If the lamp lights, the winding is shorted to ground. Replace such a rotor. 2. Using a special tester, check for short circuits between rotor winding sections or commutator segments, and for open circuits at the points where the winding leads are soldered to the commutator segments. If the rotor is damaged, replace it. 3. Inspect the commutator surface. If the commutator is dirty or burnt, clean it with fine-grit sandpaper. If the commutator surface is badly damaged, it can be turned on a lathe, removing as little metal as possible. 4. Inspect the covers. If they are cracked, replace the covers. If bushings 7 and 11 are worn, replace the covers or the bushings.
