Adjusting the Breaker Point Gap (Conventional Ignition System)
PROCEDURE 1. Turn the distributor shaft so that the movable contact rests on the peak of the shaft cam. The contact gap will then be at its maximum. 2. Measure the gap between contacts 7 and 8 with a feeler gauge (see illustration Ignition Distributor). It must be 0.4 mm. The feeler gauge should pass between the contacts with barely noticeable resistance; it must not force the contacts apart. 3. If the gap differs from the specification, adjust it. Loosen the mounting screws of contact 8, insert a screwdriver into the slot of contact 8, and turn it to move contact 8 toward or away from contact 7 to adjust the gap. 4. Adjusting the dwell angle or the contact gap changes the ignition timing advance, so after adjusting the dwell angle or gap, adjust the ignition timing advance.
