Alternator Brush Replacement
PROCEDURE

Voltage regulator with brush holder 1 – brush; 2 – brush holder; 3 – voltage regulator; A – distance from the brush end to the brush holder face
Warning: Alternator brushes can be replaced without removing the alternator from the vehicle.
PROCEDURE 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the two bolts 19 (see illustration Bosch alternator components). 3. Remove the voltage regulator 18 with brush holder. 4. Measure distance A (see illustration Voltage regulator with brush holder) from the brush holder face to the brush end (i.e., how far the brushes protrude from the brush holder). With new brushes, it should be 13 mm. The minimum permissible distance is 5 mm.
5. If distance A is less than 5 mm, replace the voltage regulator together with the brush holder (if brush replacement is required). 6. Check that the brushes move freely in the brush holders. 7. Install the voltage regulator on the alternator. 8. Tighten the bolts. 9. Connect the negative battery cable.
