Adjusting the Ignition Timing Advance (Conventional Ignition System)

~1min read

PROCEDURE

Ignition timing is adjusted on a warm engine with the idle speed already set, in the following sequence: PROCEDURE 1. Connect a timing light to the engine. 2. Start the engine and let it idle. 3. On engines with displacement of 1.1 and 1.3 L, disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor vacuum advance unit and plug it. On engines with displacement of 1.6 L, do not disconnect the vacuum hose. 4. Aim the timing light at the timing marks: on engines with displacement of 1.1 and 1.3 L, at the crankshaft pulley; on engines with displacement of 1.6 L, through the window at the top of the clutch housing, after first removing the plastic plug. On engines with displacement of 1.1 and 1.3 L, the mark on the pulley must align with projection D (see figure Camshaft drive belt tension adjustment) of plate 9. On engines with displacement of 1.6 L, the ignition timing mark must align with the boss on the clutch housing. 5. If the marks do not align, adjust the ignition timing. To do this, on engines with displacement of 1.1 and 1.3 L, loosen the bolts 20 (see figure

Distributor) securing the distributor. On engines with displacement of 1.6 L, loosen the clamp bolt of the distributor holder and, turning the distributor, align the marks. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts. 6. Stop the engine. Disconnect the timing light and connect the vacuum hose to the distributor vacuum advance unit.
