Inspecting the Breaker Points (Conventional Ignition System)
PROCEDURE 1. Disconnect the high-tension leads from the distributor cap. 2. Remove shield 21 (see illustration Ignition Distributor). 3. Unhook springs 11 and remove cap 1. 4. Remove rotor 3 and dust shield 4. 5. Remove bolts 5 and remove cover 6. 6. Observe the contacts while an assistant cranks the starter. If strong sparking occurs between the contacts, capacitor 9 is faulty and must be replaced. Only slight, intermittent sparks should jump between the breaker points. 7. Remove movable contact 7 and inspect. If the contacts have light blue burn marks, the capacitor is faulty. Gray or black marks are normal. If metal has transferred significantly from one contact to the other, dress the contact with a fine velvet file. After dressing, clean the contacts with gasoline. When dressing, remove the bump on the stationary contact. Do not fully remove the crater on the movable contact. The contacts must mate over their entire surface. 8. Install the removed parts in place.
