Checking Distributor Centrifugal Advance Mechanism (Conventional Ignition System)

~1min read

PROCEDURE

To perform a preliminary check of the centrifugal advance mechanism, turn rotor 3 by hand (see figure Distributor), overcoming the resistance of the centrifugal advance springs. Release the rotor; it should immediately return to its original position. If it does not, the advance springs are stretched or the advance weights are sticking. A more accurate check can be made with a timing light: PROCEDURE 1. Connect a timing light to the engine. 2. Disconnect the hose from distributor vacuum advance unit 19. 3. Start the engine and let it idle. 4. Aim the timing light at the timing marks (see step 4 of subsection 12.13.1.6). 5. Increase engine speed while observing the mark on the crankshaft pulley or flywheel. If the mark moves as engine speed increases, the centrifugal advance mechanism is working.
