Compression Test
GENERAL INFORMATION.
Warning.
Disconnect the "BAT" terminal from the ignition module or distributor..
Cylinder compression is checked to determine the technical
condition of the piston rings and valve seating. Check compression with the throttle and air valves open and spark plugs removed.
ignition switch off and a fully charged battery. Compression in individual
cylinders should not differ greatly. The minimum pressure in the cylinders must be
not less than 689 kPa and at least 70% of the maximum value for all
cylinders. Take measurements on each cylinder during four compression
strokes.
Normal condition of piston rings and valves.
Pressure builds up quickly and evenly to the nominal value.
Worn piston rings.
On the first compression stroke the pressure is low; on subsequent strokes the pressure increases,
but does not reach the nominal value. When 20–25 ml of engine oil is added to the cylinders, compression increases noticeably.
Valves not seating properly.
On the first and subsequent compression strokes the pressure remains low. When engine oil
is added to the cylinders, compression does not improve significantly. To add oil to the
cylinders, use a piston-type oil injector.
