Oil Pump Repair

GENERAL INFORMATION.

Warning.

When repairing the oil pump, clean the oil pan of dirt, replace the oil filter and replace the engine oil with fresh oil..

Disassembly

PROCEDURE.

1. Drain oil from the pump..

2. Intake pipe assembly with filter..

3. Pump cover..

4. Pump gears..

5. Pressure relief valve.

– valve. If the valve does not come out, soak the pump body in carburetor cleaning solvent..

Warning.

The valve spring is preloaded. To prevent injury

use caution when removing the plug or cotter pin..

Clean.

PROCEDURE.

Clean all parts of dirt, oil and deposits. Stubborn deposits can be removed by soaking parts in carburetor cleaning solvent..

Warning.

To prevent poisoning, avoid inhaling vapors and contact

of solvent with exposed skin.

Inspection

PROCEDURE.

1. Presence of foreign particles, determine the cause of their entry..

2. Pump body and cover for:

– cracks.

– scratches.

– casting defects.

– damaged threaded holes.

The pump body is not repairable. If defects are found, replace the body..

3. Intermediate gear shaft, if equipped. If the fit is loose,

replace the pump or camshaft drive belt cover (depending on engine type)..

4. Pressure relief valve for:

– scratches.

– signs of seizure.

Remove dents and burrs with a fine honing stone.

5. Pressure relief valve spring for:

– loss of elasticity.

– bending.

If defects are found, replace the spring..

6. Intake pipe assembly with filter for:

– leaks, if the pipe is pressed into the pump body. If the pipe

is removable or has been removed, replace the intake pipe assembly with filter.

– damage to the mesh intake strainer..

7. Gears for:

– material chipping.

– galling.

– wear..

8. Drive shaft for:

– leaks at the joints.

– wear..

Assembly.

PROCEDURE.

1. Lubricate all internal pump parts with engine oil..

2. Pump gears. The timing mark on the gear must face the camshaft drive cover side..

Warning.

To prevent engine damage, before installing the gears

fill all cavities of the oil pump with petroleum jelly to ensure oil suction and delivery to the engine lubrication system..

3. Cover and gasket..

Warning.

To prevent engine damage, use only genuine

factory gaskets. Gasket thickness is very important for proper operation.

4. Pressure relief valve and spring..

5. Plug..

Warning.

Apply "Loctite 573" or equivalent sealant to the plug threads. Tighten the pressure relief valve plug (if equipped) to torque 30 N·m..

Inspection

PROCEDURE.

1. Remove the oil pressure sensor and install a pressure gauge in its place..

2. Start the engine and measure the oil pressure..

Warning.

If oil pressure does not immediately reach normal level,

remove the oil pan and check the connection between the pump and intake pipe. If necessary, remove and disassemble the pump, fill the pump cavities and reassemble the pump. Operating the engine without oil pressure will lead to

serious engine damage.
