Repair of Plastic Components
Repair of cracked plastic components should be entrusted to specialists. The technique involves using a bore machine to cut a groove along the crack, into which a plastic rod made of the same type of plastic as the damaged part is then inserted. The halves of the cracked panel are then welded together using a special hot air gun. Excess plastic is removed by grinding.
Less serious damage can be repaired by a do-it-yourself mechanic by filling the defect with a 2-component epoxy compound (the technique is similar to that used for filling damaged areas of metal body panels).
When replacing a damaged plastic component, take care to select a replacement panel that matches the color. To paint plastic parts, use special paints and primers, available from automotive accessory stores, and strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions.
