Seat Belts with Pretensioners (Vehicles without Airbags)

~1min read

Under normal conditions, a seat belt with pretensioner operates in the same way as a seat belt with an inertia locking mechanism. (The belt locks in its current position in the event of sudden vehicle braking. It also locks if you pull the belt out too quickly from the retractor.) However, at the moment of a collision, the seat belt pretensioner instantly retracts the seat belt to firmly secure the occupant and take up slack in the belt.

When the seat belt pretensioner activates, a small amount of smoke is released and a loud bang occurs. This bang is normal and not dangerous.

The seat belt pretensioner is designed to activate only in a medium or high-force impact, and only once.

If the seat belt pretensioner has activated, do not attempt to replace it yourself. This must be performed only by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
