Automatic Transmission Shift Lever Positions

The high-efficiency Hyundai automatic transmission has four forward gears and one reverse gear. It has the conventional shift pattern shown in Figure 117. At night, the indicator for the selected gear range will illuminate in the first position of the multifunction switch on the shift pattern diagram.

Do not move the selector lever to the "P" or "R" position while the vehicle is moving.

To move the selector, it is not necessary to press the button.

For maximum fuel economy, accelerate smoothly. The automatic transmission will automatically shift into second, third, and overdrive gears.

SELECTOR LEVER POSITION FUNCTIONS

"P" – Park

Use this position to hold the vehicle in place while parking or starting the engine. When parking the vehicle, apply the parking brake and move the selector lever to the "P" (Park) position.

Do not move the selector lever to the "P" (Park) position until the vehicle has come to a complete stop. Failure to observe this may cause damage to the automatic transmission.

"R" – Reverse:

Use this position to drive in reverse. Move the selector lever to the "R" (Reverse) position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

"N" – Neutral:

In this selector position, the automatic transmission is disengaged. The engine can be started in this position; however, this is not recommended except when the engine has stalled while the vehicle is moving.

"D" – "Drive", main driving range:

This selector lever position is the main position for driving. The automatic transmission will automatically shift through four forward gears, providing better fuel economy and performance. If vehicle speed exceeds 95 km/h, never move the selector to the "2" (Second) or "L" (Low) position.

"2" – Second gear:

Use this position for driving on slippery roads, climbing steep grades, and for engine braking when descending steep grades. In this selector position, the transmission shifts automatically between 1st and 2nd gears. This means it does not shift into 3rd gear. However, if vehicle speed exceeds a certain value, the transmission shifts into 3rd gear to prevent excessive engine speed. Moving the selector to the "D" ("Drive") position restores normal gear shifting.

"L" – Low gear:

This selector lever position is the main position for driving on very steep grades and for engine braking at low vehicle speeds when descending steep grades. When Low ("L") range is selected, the transmission will temporarily remain in second gear until the vehicle slows to a speed at which Low ("L") range can be engaged. When driving in "L" ("Low") range, do not exceed a speed of 50 km/h.

For smooth and safe gear shifting, when moving the selector from "N" or "P", fully depress the brake pedal before selecting a gear.

To move the selector from "N" or "P" to any other position, the brake pedal must be fully depressed.

You can always move the selector from "R", "N", "D", "2", or "L" to the "P" position.

Move the selector to the "P" or "R" position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.

Do not increase engine speed when the selector is in the Reverse position or in one of the drive positions with the brake pedal depressed.

When moving the selector from "N" or "P" to another position ("P", "D", "2", or "L"), always depress the brake pedal.

Do not use the "P" position in place of the parking brake. Always apply the parking brake, move the selector to the "P" position, and turn off the ignition whenever you leave the vehicle, even for a moment. Never leave the vehicle unattended while the engine is running.

Check the automatic transmission fluid level regularly and add fluid as necessary.
