Camshaft Timing Chain Cover
GENERAL INFORMATION
Warning: If the timing chain cover is removed without disturbing the cylinder head attachment, slight oil leaks may occur at the joint between the cover and cylinder head after assembly. Keep this in mind, and decide before removing the timing chain cover whether the cylinder head gasket will be replaced.Removal
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the crankshaft pulley (refer to subsection 3.2.1.5).
2. Remove both oil pans and the oil pickup assembly together with the coarse filter (refer to subsection 3.2.1.12).
3. Remove the power steering pump (refer to subsection 12.15).
4. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
5. Remove the alternator (refer to subsection 7.3).
6. Raise the engine by placing a jack under the cast main bearing cap frame in the crankcase, first placing a board under the frame. The engine can also be suspended from a hoist or spreader bar by attaching the hoist chains to the lifting lugs provided on the engine.
7. Remove the right powertrain mount through-bolt, then remove the mounting bolts and take the mount assembly out of the engine compartment. If the rubber mount cushions have separated from the body bracket, remove the cushions as well.

8. Remove the mounting bolts and take the right powertrain mount bracket off the engine.
9. Loosen and remove the timing chain cover bolts, including the three upper bolts securing the cover to the cylinder head. The bolts are of different lengths, so mark their original positions.
10. Remove the cover from the crankshaft nose, then, maneuvering it carefully, take the cover out of the engine compartment. Remove the O-ring from the oil passage. It must be replaced.
11. If the cover locating pins have loosened, remove them and store them together with the cover.
12. Note the correct position of the chain oil jet nozzle. If the nozzle comes out freely, remove it and store it together with the cover.
13. Remove the spacer bushing of the oil pump drive gear from the crankshaft nose. Remove the key from the crankshaft if its fit in the groove has loosened, and store it together with the spacer bushing.
Installation
PROCEDURE

1. It is recommended to replace the crankshaft seal before installation. Carefully remove the used seal by prying it out with a large screwdriver.

2. Install the new seal so that the sealing lips face inward. Press the seal into place until it seats against the shoulder. The seal may be pressed in with a tubular drift that bears only on the outer edge of the seal.
3. Make sure the sealing surfaces of the cover and the cylinder block are clean and dry.
4. Install the key onto the crankshaft (if removed).

5. Align the key groove in the oil pump drive spacer bushing with the key, then slide the bushing onto the crankshaft nose.

6. Install the locating pins in place (if removed) and fit the O-ring into the groove around the oil passage. Also check that the chain oil jet nozzle is installed correctly (if it was removed).

7. Apply a thin layer of sealant to the mating surface of the cover and the cylinder block. Warning: Do not apply sealant near the cover oil passage opening or the oil groove (the location is indicated by the arrow in the illustration).
8. If the cylinder head was not removed, also apply sealant to the upper surface of the cover.
9. Bring up the cover and position the oil pump drive gear so that it meshes with the spacer bushing when the cover is installed. Slide the cover onto the crankshaft, taking care not to damage the sealing lips of the seal, and seat the cover on the locating pins.
10. Install the cover bolts into their original holes and tighten the bolts evenly across the cover face. Tighten in several stages, gradually increasing the force until the specified tightening torque is reached.

11. Install the three M6 timing chain cover bolts securing the cover to the cylinder block head, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
12. Install the right engine mount bracket to the engine and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Install the rubber cushions on the body-side mount bracket (if removed), making sure the cushion studs are seated in the bracket holes. Install the mount and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
13. Align the right engine mount with the body bracket, insert the through bolt, and tighten the nut to the specified torque. Remove the vehicle from the stand.
14. Install the oil strainer with the coarse filter and the oil pan (refer to subsection 3.2.1.12).
15. Install the cylinder head cover (refer to subsection 3.2.1.4).
16. Install the alternator (refer to subsection 7.3).
17. Install the coolant pump pulley and tighten the bolts securely.
18. Install the power steering pump (refer to subsection 12.15).
19. Install the crankshaft pulley (refer to subsection 3.1.1.5).
