Engine Starting After Overhaul
PROCEDURE
1. After engine assembly is complete, check the oil and coolant levels twice. Check that the wiring and hoses are connected correctly, and remove all foreign objects from the engine compartment.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wires, remove the spark plugs and turn off the ignition. Remove the high-tension lead from the distributor cap and securely connect it to the cylinder block with a jumper and clamps.
3. Crank the crankshaft with the starter until the oil pressure warning lamp goes out. Install the spark plugs and reconnect the spark plug high-tension wires and the distributor lead (see subsection 2.2.3).
4. Start the engine. The engine should start after a short period required to fill the fuel line with gasoline.
5. While the engine warms up, carefully check for oil, fuel or coolant leaks. Unusual odors and smoke from parts exposed to high temperature are permissible due to burning off residual oil.
6. If everything is in order, wait until the upper radiator hose becomes warm, then stop the engine and check the oil and coolant levels.
7. Check the ignition timing and idle speed adjustment (if the check is specified), then stop the engine.
8. After a few minutes, check the oil and coolant levels (see subsection 2.2.8) and top up if necessary.
9. If the cylinder head bolts were tightened according to this description, do not retighten the cylinder head bolts after the first engine start following overhaul.
10. If new pistons, rings, main bearings and connecting rod bearings were installed, the engine must be broken in during the first 800 km. During the break-in period, do not drive with the throttle fully open or at very low speed in any gear. It is recommended to change the oil and filter after the break-in period.
