Oil Pan
GENERAL INFORMATION

Tightening sequence for the nuts and bolts of the aluminum oil pan
Removal
PROCEDURE
1. Apply the parking brake, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the screws and the plastic engine undershield.
3. Drain the engine oil. After draining, clean the drain plug, install it and tighten it to the specified torque. If the work is performed when the oil and filter change is due, it is also recommended to replace the oil filter. After assembly, fill the engine with fresh oil.
4. Referring to the description in Subsection 6.1.13, disconnect the muffler inlet pipe from the exhaust manifold.

5. In the reverse of the sequence shown in the Tightening sequence for the nuts and bolts of the aluminum oil pan illustration, remove all bolts securing the steel stamped lower oil pan to the aluminum alloy main oil pan base. Tap the sealing surface of the lower oil pan with the palm of your hand to break the seal, and remove the lower oil pan from under the vehicle.

6. Remove the bolts and the oil baffle plate from the aluminum oil pan base.
7. Slightly raise the transmission case using a jack, placing a board between the jack and the unit so that the jack supports its weight. The engine may also be supported on a crossbar or a hoist.
8. On vehicles with a manual transmission, use a marker to mark the position of the bolt on the front mount bracket. These marks will be used to align the bolt during installation. Loosen and remove the nut, then remove the mount clamp bolt.
9. On all vehicles, loosen and remove the clamp bolt nut and remove the bolt from the rear powertrain mount.
10. Loosen and remove the four bolts securing the center member to the body, remove the center member assembly and take it out from under the vehicle. Remove the stop ring installed between the rear mount and the bracket.
11. On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, loosen and remove the bolts securing the lower air conditioning compressor bracket to the aluminum oil pan. Warning: Do not remove the compressor itself.

12. Remove the two bolts from the oil pan cover.

13. Remove the cover, which provides access to the two oil pan mounting nuts.

14. In the reverse of the sequence shown in the illustration, remove the nuts and bolts securing the aluminum oil pan to the cylinder block base.

15. Remove the two bolts (1) securing the flange of the oil pan to the transmission case. Install these bolts into the adjacent threaded holes (2) and use them to press the oil pan off the cylinder block. Screw the bolts in until they contact the cylinder block mating surface, then tighten the bolts alternately, gradually increasing the force to evenly separate the oil pan from the cylinder block base without distortion.

16. Remove the aluminum oil pan and unscrew the bolts that were used to separate the pan from the cylinder block.
Warning: On vehicles with an automatic transmission, it may be necessary to disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission to remove the oil pan.

17. While the oil pan is removed, remove the two bolts and take the oil pickup with the coarse strainer and the oil baffle plate off the main bearing cap frame. Remove the O-ring installed between the oil pickup and the timing chain cover. Wash the coarse strainer in solvent. Check the oil pickup screen for clogging or tears. If any damage is found, replace the oil pickup assembly together with the coarse strainer.
18. Check the rubber bushings of the center member for signs of damage and replace them if necessary.
Installation
PROCEDURE
1. Clean the sealant residue from the mating surfaces of both oil pans and the cylinder block, then wipe the oil pans and the internal engine surfaces clean.

2. Place a new O-ring in the groove of the oil pickup and install the oil pickup onto the timing chain cover base. Securely tighten the oil pickup mounting bolts. Install the oil baffle plate on the projections in the lower part of the crankcase and securely tighten the mounting bolts.

3. Make sure the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the cylinder block are dry and clean. Apply a continuous bead of sealant to the sealing surface of the aluminum oil pan. Note that the bead must be on the outside around the bolts marked with an asterisk, and on the inside around the other bolts.
4. Position the oil pan against the cylinder block. Install the bolts and nuts and tighten them by hand. Tighten the oil pan bolts and nuts to the specified torque, in the sequence shown in the Tightening sequence for the nuts and bolts of the aluminum oil pan illustration.
5. Install the two bolts securing the oil pan flange to the transmission case and tighten them securely. If necessary, connect the selector lever cable.
6. Install the cover on the oil pan flange and tighten the bolts.
7. On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, securely tighten the compressor bracket bolts.
8. Make sure all rubber bushings are in place, then install the stop ring on the rear powertrain mount bracket. Install the center member in place, aligning it with the engine mounts, and install the bolts with washers. Tighten the center member bolts to the specified torque.
9. On vehicles with a manual transaxle, install the front engine mount through-bolt in place and tighten the nut. Position the powertrain so that the front mount through-bolt aligns exactly with the mark made before disassembly. Then tighten the bolt to the specified torque.
10. Install the rear engine mount through-bolt and tighten the nut to the specified torque.
11. Remove the jack from under the transmission case.
12. Install the oil baffle plate in the base of the aluminum oil pan and securely tighten the bolts.

13. Check that the mating surface of the small oil pan (stamped steel) is clean. Apply a continuous bead of sealant to this surface.

14. Apply sealant to the groove between the holes in the center of the mating surface, and around the inner edge of each bolt hole.

15. Position the oil pan and tighten the bolts by hand. Tighten the bolts in the specified sequence to the specified torque.
16. Install the exhaust muffler inlet pipe (refer to Subsection 6.1.14).
17. Install the lower splash shields and tighten the mounting screws.
18. Fill the engine with oil.
