Suspension and Steering Inspection

~2min read

The front suspension layout is shown in the figure. Front suspension components.

PROCEDURE

1. Установите колеса в положение езды по прямой, заблокируйте колеса. Поверните

1. Set the wheels in the straight-ahead position and chock the wheels. Turn the steering wheel to the right and left. Steering wheel free play is the distance the steering wheel turns before the wheels begin to turn (at this point slight resistance is felt).
2. If excessive play is felt, the cause is wear of the hub bearings, steering column shaft, intermediate shaft, suspension arm ball joints or steering gear ball joints, or incorrect adjustment or wear of the steering gear.
3. Other symptoms, such as excessive body sway when driving over rough roads, wandering when cornering, or steering wheel binding, indicate abnormal operation and wear of steering and suspension components.
4. Check the shock absorbers by pressing down sharply on each corner of the vehicle several times and releasing. If the body does not return to its original position after one or two presses, this indicates failure of the suspension struts and the need to replace them. While pressing and releasing the vehicle, listen for noises from suspension components. For additional information, refer to Subsection 10.2 and Subsection 10.3.

Underbody Inspection

PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle and support it on stands (stand locations under the body are specified in Subsection 1.6.7).
2. Check the tire tread for even wear and check tire pressure (for the tire inspection procedure, refer to Subsection 2.4; Subsection 10.13 describes hub bearing replacement).
3. Check the condition of the cross joint between the steering column shaft and the steering gear housing. Check the steering gear housing for oil leaks or seepage through the gaskets. Make sure seals and protective boots are intact and boot clamps are secure. Check that steering and suspension components are securely attached and free of mechanical damage. Check the steering rack ball joints for play. Check the tightness of all threaded connections, the presence of broken or disconnected parts, and the condition of suspension rubber bushings. Ask an assistant to turn the steering wheel. While turning, observe play in steering components, bending of parts, and freedom of movement (play). If significant play is found in steering connections, locate the loose connection.

4. Проверьте износ шаровых опор подвески. Для этого под каждое колесо подложите

4. Check suspension ball joint wear. Place a wooden block 180 mm high under each wheel. Lower the vehicle onto the blocks until the suspension spring carries a load equal to half of the rated load. Make sure the wheel is in the straight-ahead position and chock the wheel.
5. Pry the lower suspension arm up and down with a pry bar. There should be no play. Otherwise, replace the ball joint. For the ball joint replacement procedure, refer to Subsection 10.6.

6. Проверьте целостность защитного чехла опоры, отжав его пальцем. При обнаружении

6. Check the integrity of the joint boot by pressing it with a finger. If the boot is damaged or shows signs of grease, replace the boot.
