Check valve guides

~1min read
All engines

When repairing engines with leaking valves, it is not sufficient to rework or replace the valves. It is also essential to check the valve guides for wear, particularly on engines with high mileage. If wear is excessive, either the valve guides must be replaced (workshop work!) or the cylinder head must be replaced.

  • Remove deposits from the valve guides with a cylindrical soft-metal brush or with a reamer.

  • Install the new valve. The valve stem end must be flush with the guide.

  • Determine the rocker play. To do this, place a dial gauge against the edge of the valve head and move the valve back and forth by hand.

Wear limit for intake and exhaust valve guides: diesel engine: 0.35 mm, all other engines: 0.25 mm. Only barely noticeable play may be present.

  • If the rocker play is too large, have the valve guides replaced by a workshop.
