Removing and installing engine

~1min read

The engine is removed downwards together with the transmission. Therefore, read the chapter "Removing and installing transmission" before removing the engine. The exhaust and intake manifolds, fuel injection system and alternator/starter motor remain attached to the engine. A crane is required to remove the engine-transmission unit.

Since some connections on the underside of the vehicle must also be disconnected, four support stands and a positioning jack to raise the vehicle are required. Before working in the engine compartment, protect the fenders with blankets.

Depending on model year and equipment, the electrical wiring or vacuum and coolant hoses may be routed differently in the engine compartment. Since not every variant can be covered individually, it is recommended to mark each line with masking tape before disconnecting it.

Electrical plug connectors are secured with metal or plastic clips. Before disconnecting, squeeze the clips together at the side tabs.

The engine removal is described using the 1.6 L engine as an example. Observe the notes at the end of the chapter for the other engines.

Warning: on vehicles with air conditioning, the refrigerant circuit must be opened. This may only be performed by a qualified workshop. Do not open the refrigerant circuit.

Air conditioning refrigerant can cause frostbite on skin contact. Risk of injury! Note for the qualified workshop: to make draining easier, start the engine and run the air conditioning for 10 to 15 minutes.
