Towing Hitches

~2min read

Select the correct hitch combination, making sure its location matches the attachment point on the trailer or towed vehicle. Use a hitch that distributes the load evenly across the chassis.

Do not connect the trailer brake system to the vehicle brake system.
When towing a trailer up a steep grade (exceeding 12%), pay particular attention to the engine coolant temperature gauge to prevent engine overheating. If the engine coolant temperature gauge needle enters the "H" (Hot) zone of the scale, stop the vehicle in a safe place and let the engine idle until it cools down. After that, you may continue driving.

Maximum trailer weight and maximum tongue load
The tongue load can be increased or decreased by redistributing the load in the trailer. This can be verified by checking the gross weight of the loaded trailer and checking the tongue load.

Do not load the trailer so that its rear is loaded more than its front. 60% of the cargo weight in the trailer should be located in the front half of the trailer, and the remaining 40% in the rear half.

The total trailer weight must not exceed the values specified in the table.
The load on the front or rear axle must not exceed the maximum axle load specified on the vehicle identification plate. It is possible that the towed trailer weight does not exceed the gross vehicle weight but exceeds the maximum axle load. Incorrect loading of the trailer and/or too much luggage in the vehicle cargo area can overload the rear axle. Redistribute the load and check the axle loads again.

The maximum permissible static vertical load on the coupling device is 50 kg.

Maximum trailer weight and permissible load on the coupling device

Maximum load
Maximum trailer weight Maximum permissible load on the coupling device
With brakes 1.3 L. 900 50
1.5 L. 1100
Without brakes 453 50

Incorrect loading of your vehicle and trailer can seriously affect steering and braking performance, which may lead to a traffic accident in which you could be seriously injured.
