Checking Rack Neutral Position
GENERAL INFORMATION

Checking the steered wheels in the straight-ahead position. A. BRAKE BOOSTER.
B. MASTER BRAKE CYLINDER.
C. VACUUM CHECK VALVE.
20. RUBBER MOUNTING BUSHING.
30. BOLT.
44. HOUSING COVER
After completing any repair work on the steering gear (removal and installation,
disassembly and assembly), check the neutral position of the rack,
corresponding to the steered wheels in the straight-ahead position.
Adjustment

Rack position corresponding to straight-ahead vehicle travel. A. CENTER POSITION OF RACK.
38. BOLT.
40. TIE ROD (RIGHT).

55. HOUSING

Checking steering gear assembly correctness. A. Incorrect steering gear assembly (the clamp bolt axis is not horizontal).

PROCEDURE.
1. Install the KM-476 gauge plate between the tie-rod ends.
The gauge pin must engage the recess of the left (in the direction of travel) rubber bushing seat.
2. Hold the steering wheel in the position corresponding to straight-ahead driving. With the rack in neutral, dimension A must be 325 mm.
3. Check that the following conditions are met.
– the coupling clamp bolt must be located on top.
of the steering shaft, and its axis must be horizontal.
– the steering wheel spokes must be symmetrical about the
vertical and point downward.
If the clamp bolt axis is inclined, the steering gear has been assembled incorrectly (offset by one or more rack teeth). In this
case, it is necessary to remove the pinion shaft and reassemble the gear.
case, the valve-gear shaft must be removed and the mechanism reassembled.
If the coupling clamp bolt is horizontal and the steering wheel spokes are
asymmetrical about the vertical (deviation more than 5 degrees), remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft, center it, and reinstall it.
