Checking Transmission Fluid Level

The transmission fluid level is checked when the transmission is warm (fluid temperature

must be at least 40 °C). Warm up the transmission as follows.

PROCEDURE.

1. Drive the vehicle onto a lift or into an inspection pit. The vehicle must

be level so that the fluid level check results are

accurate..

2. Place a suitable container under the fluid level check

hole plug.

3. Start the engine and let it idle for about 5 minutes. If possible, also warm up the transmission by driving the vehicle several kilometers..

4. With the brake pedal depressed, move the range selector through all positions

of the transmission, pausing a few seconds at each position. Then return the selector to P (Park)..

5. Unscrew the check hole plug. The normal fluid level may be either above or below the edge of the check hole. In the first case, fluid will flow out of the check hole..

Warning.

Hot transmission fluid flowing out of the check hole may cause burns..

If fluid flows out of the check hole, the transmission may have been overfilled. After the fluid stops flowing from the hole, the fluid level in the case will be correct. Install in place.

the plug and tighten it to torque 12 N·m.

If fluid does not flow out of the open check hole, the fluid level in the transmission may be below the specified level. In this case, through.

the filler hole, add fluid to the case in small portions (by 0.5 L).

until fluid begins to flow out of the check hole, but no more than 1.5 L. If when.

this fluid began to flow out of the check hole, the fluid level was correct.

Allow excess fluid to drain completely from the check hole and install the plug. Tighten the check hole plug to torque 12 N·m.

If, however, after adding 1.5 liters the fluid level has not risen to the lower edge of the check hole (fluid does not flow out of the check.

hole), this indicates that the fluid level in the transmission was below the specified level. Fluid leaks are also possible. Inspect.

the transmission for signs of leaks and eliminate all detected faults before bringing the fluid level to the specified level..

6. After completing the fluid level check, wipe off traces of.

fluid on the transmission case surface. Check that the filler cap and breather tube are installed correctly..

Topping up transmission fluid to the normal level after repair.

PROCEDURE.

1. Depending on the type of repair, fill the transmission case with the fluid.

in the following quantity.

Repair involving removal of the transmission oil pan (without removing.

the transmission from the vehicle) – 7 L.

Replacement of torque converter – 2.5 L.

Repair involving complete disassembly of the transmission – 10 L.

2. Perform steps 1 through 4 for checking the fluid level.

3. Through the filler hole, add fluid to the case in large portions (by 0.5 L) until fluid begins to flow out of the check hole..

4. Allow excess fluid to drain completely from the check hole and install the plug. Tighten the check hole plug to torque 12 N·m..

5. After bringing the fluid level to specification, wipe off traces of.

fluid on the transmission case surface. Check that the filler cap and breather tube are installed correctly.
