Body Dent Repair

~1min read

PROCEDURE

1. If there is a deep dent in the body, first push it out so that the surface is restored to nearly its original shape.

2. Do not attempt to restore the exact original shape. The metal in the damaged area was stretched by the impact and cannot be returned to its exact original form.

3. It is best to restore the surface so that the dent depth does not exceed 3 mm.

4. If the dent is not deep, do not attempt to push it out at all.

5. If there is access to the reverse side of the deformed surface, try to restore its shape using a soft-faced mallet.

6. When doing so, place a wooden block against the outer surface of the body to absorb the impact energy and prevent bulges from forming.

If the dent is in an area of the body with an inner closing panel, or if something else makes this area inaccessible from the inside, use the following method.

PROCEDURE

1. Drill several small holes in the metal inside the dented area, especially in the deepest part.

2. Then screw long self-tapping screws into the holes until they are firmly held in the metal.

3. Now the dent can be pulled out by gripping the screw heads with pliers.

4. The next step is to remove the paint from the damaged area, as well as from an area several centimeters around it, using a sanding attachment or wire brush mounted on a drill.

5. If you do not have these tools, you can use sandpaper.

6. To complete preparation for priming, scratch the metal surface with a screwdriver or the corner of a file, or drill small holes in the damaged area.

7. This will ensure good adhesion of the primer.

8. To complete the repair, perform the operations described in subsection 13.3.4.
