Minor Body Scratch Repair

~1min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

If the scratch is superficial and does not penetrate to the body metal, it is very easy to repair.

PROCEDURE

1. Wipe the area around the scratch with paint restorer, or treat it with a very fine polishing compound, to remove loose paint from the scratch and clean the surrounding surface of wax coating.

2. Wash the area with clean water.

3. Apply new paint to the scratch using a fine brush. Continue applying thin coats of paint until the paint surface in the scratch is level with the surrounding paint.

4. Allow the paint to cure for at least two weeks. Then blend it with the surrounding paint by treating the scratch area with restorer or a very fine polishing compound.

5. Then apply a wax polish.

If the scratch has penetrated the body metal and caused rust, use a different method.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove rust from the bottom of the scratch using the tip of a knife. Then apply a layer of anti-corrosion primer to prevent rust from forming in the future.

2. Using a rubber or nylon brush, fill the scratch with primer.

3. If necessary, mix the primer with thinner to form a very thin paste, which is ideal for filling fine scratches.

4. Before the primer hardens, wrap a piece of soft cotton cloth around your finger.

5. Dip your finger in thinner and quickly draw it across the primer surface in the scratch. This makes the primer surface slightly concave.

6. The scratch can then be painted.
