Proper Braking Technique

~2min read

Before driving off after parking, make sure the parking brake is released and the brake system warning lamp is off.
After driving through water or washing the vehicle, the brakes may become wet. Wet brakes are very dangerous because the vehicle may not stop quickly. To dry the brakes, lightly apply them while driving until braking returns to normal, making sure you maintain control of the vehicle.

Do not coast downhill in neutral. Always keep the transmission engaged while the vehicle is moving. Use the brakes to reduce vehicle speed, then shift to a lower gear so that engine braking helps maintain a safe speed.

Avoid a driving style with frequent hard braking. Do not keep your left foot on the brake pedal while driving. This can be dangerous because it overheats the brakes and reduces their braking efficiency. It also causes increased wear of brake system components. If a tire puncture occurs while driving, lightly apply the brake pedal and try to keep the vehicle straight while reducing speed. When you have slowed sufficiently, leave the road and bring the vehicle to a complete stop in a safe place. If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, do not allow the vehicle to creep forward. To prevent this, keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is stopped.

Take precautions when parking on a slope. Apply the parking brake and move the selector lever to the "P" position (automatic transmission) or shift the manual transmission into neutral (manual transmission). When parking downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling. When parking uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling. If there is no curb, or if it is necessary to prevent the vehicle from rolling for other reasons, block the wheels.

Under certain conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This happens when snow or ice builds up around the rear brakes, or if the rear brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily until you move the selector lever to the "P" position (automatic transmission) or shift the manual transmission into first gear or reverse to lock the vehicle wheels. Then release the parking brake.
Do not hold the vehicle on a slope using the accelerator pedal. This may cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or the parking brake.
