Diesel engine only
On the diesel engine, the timing belt drives the injection pump in addition to the camshaft. After fitting the timing belt, the start of injection of the injection pump must be set precisely by a qualified workshop.

The timing belt can only be removed with the upper right engine mount - 1 - removed.
To relieve the engine mount during removal, lift the engine slightly with an engine hoist. To do this, hook 2 commercially available carabiner hooks onto the engine lifting eyes on the cylinder head and connect them to the engine hoist with a rope. If no lifting fixture is available, pass a rope through the brackets on the engine, push a sturdy pipe through the rope, and support it on suitable stands. Warning: do not support the pipe on the wings.
Unscrew the upper right engine mount - 2 - , see illustration.
Warning: the lower right engine mount - 3 - remains fitted.
Remove the serpentine belt, see page 58.

Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers - 1 - and - 2 - by unscrewing them - arrows - and take off the seals - 3 -.

Turn the engine to TDC of No. 1 cylinder. At TDC, the mark on the camshaft sprocket is opposite the mark on the rear timing belt cover - left illustration - and the mark on the flywheel is opposite the mark on the transmission housing window - right illustration.

Loosen the nut on tensioner pulley - 6 - and remove the timing belt.
Fit the timing belt so that the direction-of-rotation arrow points clockwise and the marks on the belt align with the marks on the sprockets of the camshaft, crankshaft and injection pump.

Using a suitable wooden piece (e.g. a hammer handle), tension the tensioner pulley at the lever (arrow) until pointer - 1 - is at the upper stop. The tensioner pulley is then at maximum tension. Tighten the tensioner pulley mounting nut.
Turn the crankshaft 2 revolutions in the direction of engine rotation (clockwise). This distributes the timing belt tension evenly.

Securing nut - a - for tensioner pulley: Carefully loosen with ring spanner. Hold tensioner pulley with wooden block, otherwise the timing belt will slacken again. Slowly release tensioner pulley until the movable pointer - 1 - is aligned with the mark - 2 -. In this position, tighten the timing belt tensioner nut with torque wrench to 30 N·m. Note: Measure the thread diameter of the tensioner pulley bolt. The bolt usually has an outer diameter of 8 mm. If it has a 10 mm diameter, retighten the timing belt tensioner nut with torque wrench to 50 N·m.
Install timing belt cover.
Install upper engine mount. The torque of the bolts depends on the respective thread diameter: M8 thread: 35 N·m, M10 thread: 50 N·m, M12 thread: 90 N·m.
Have the injection pump start of delivery checked as soon as possible and adjusted if necessary (workshop job).
