SRS system functions and components

~3min read

The supplemental passive safety system (SRS) includes the following components:

– driver's front airbag assembly;
– front passenger's front airbag assembly;
– knee bolster;
– SRS warning lamp;
– SRS control unit.

The SRS control unit constantly monitors all system components when the ignition switch is in the "ON" position and determines whether the frontal or near-frontal impact is severe enough to deploy the airbags.

The SRS warning lamp in the instrument cluster will flash for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position or after the engine is started, after which the lamp should go off.

The airbags are located in the center of the steering wheel and in the panel opposite the front passenger seat above the glove box. When the SRS control unit detects a frontal impact of sufficient severity, it automatically deploys the airbags.

During airbag deployment, the airbag, expanding as it is inflated with gas, pushes out the cover, which breaks along a special seam.

A fully deployed airbag, in combination with a properly fastened seat belt, slows the forward movement of the driver or front passenger, thereby reducing the risk of head and chest injuries.

After the airbag is fully inflated with gas, it begins to deflate immediately, providing the driver with a clear forward view.

When placing a container of liquid air freshener in the vehicle, do not place it either near the instrument panel or on the surface of the instrument panel trim. If liquid leaks from the air freshener container and gets onto the instrument panel, instrument panel trim or ventilation system duct, it may damage these parts.

When an SRS airbag deploys, a sharp loud bang is heard and a certain amount of smoke and dust (powder) is released. These phenomena are not hazardous and are normal. However, the dust (powder) generated when the airbags inflate may cause skin irritation. After airbag deployment, be sure to wash your face and hands with soap and warm water.

The SRS system operates only when the ignition switch is in the "ON" position. If the SRS warning light does not come on, or stays on after flashing for approximately 6 seconds after turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position, or after starting the engine, or comes on while driving, this indicates a malfunction in the SRS system. Contact your authorized Hyundai dealer immediately to have the SRS system inspected.

Before replacing a fuse or disconnecting the negative battery cable, turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position or remove the key from the ignition switch. Do not remove or replace SRS fuses while the ignition switch is in the "ON" position. Failure to observe this precaution will cause the SRS warning light to come on.
