1.6 L engine
Disconnect the battery negative (-) cable. Warning: this erases electronic memories, such as engine operating values. Observe the notes in the chapter "Remove and install battery".
Mark the position of the right front wheel relative to the wheel hub with paint. This allows the balanced wheel to be refitted in the same position. Loosen the wheel bolts while the vehicle is standing on the ground. Raise the front of the vehicle and remove the right front wheel.

Unscrew the drive belt cover in the wheel arch (arrows).

Routing of the V-ribbed belt (5) on the pulleys: 1 - alternator; 2 - coolant pump; 3 - crankshaft; 4 - belt tensioner with tensioner pulley.

Belt routing for the air conditioning V-ribbed belt: 1 - crankshaft; 2 - air conditioning compressor; 3 - deflection pulley; 4 - bracket with tensioning device.
To remove a rear-mounted belt, the belts in front of it must be removed in the specified order.
To remove the V-ribbed belt for the air conditioning compressor: loosen the mounting bolts (5) for the air conditioning compressor by approx.
1 turn, see illustration T-10281. Then loosen the locknut on the tensioning bolt and release the V-ribbed belt by loosening the tensioning bolt. The air conditioning compressor pivots towards the engine.

To remove the V-ribbed belt for the alternator: loosen bolt (1) on the belt tensioner and insert a hex key for the socket-head bolt. Pivot the belt tensioner against the direction of the arrow and remove the belt.

To remove the V-belt for power steering: unscrew the protective cover for the power steering pump from above (arrows). To reach the pump, remove the air intake pipe in the area of the timing belt cover if necessary.

Loosen nut (1) and use tensioning bolt (2) on the power steering pump to release the V-belt. Remove the V-belt.
To install the V-belt for power steering: place the V-belt on and tension it with tensioning bolt (2). After checking the tension, tighten locknut (1).

Check the V-belt tension with the special Fiat tool.
Nominal value for a new V-belt: 320 N to 450 N (newtons); for a belt that has already been run: 300 N.
A V-belt is considered run-in once it has been in operation for at least 30 minutes.
If the special tool is not available, press the V-ribbed belt between the pulleys with your thumb and estimate the deflection. Nominal value: approx. 4 mm.
Bolt the protective cover for the power steering pump back on.

Installing the V-ribbed belt for the alternator: fit the belt. Insert the hex key socket into the hexagon socket screw on the belt tensioner. Pivot the belt tensioner in the direction of the arrow and tension the belt. Tighten screw - 1 - to 25 N·m and check belt tension, readjusting if necessary.

Check the V-belt tension with the special Fiat tool.
Setpoint for a new V-ribbed belt: 520 N to 670 N; for a V-ribbed belt that has already been run: 450 N.
A V-belt is considered run-in once it has been in operation for at least 30 minutes.
If the special tool is not available, press the V-ribbed belt between the pulleys with your thumb and estimate the deflection. Nominal value: approx. 4 mm.
Note: when checking the tension of a V-ribbed belt that has been in use for a long time, only retension the belt if it can be deflected more than 6 mm during the check.
If the tension is then checked with the special tool, the V-ribbed belt must only be retensioned if the tension is less than 400 N.
Installing the V-ribbed belt for the air conditioning compressor: fit the belt and tension it by turning the tensioning screw. The tension is checked as for the V-ribbed belt for the alternator.
Tighten mounting bolts - 5 - for the air conditioning compressor, see illustration t-10281. Tighten locknut on tensioning screw.
Fit the V-ribbed belt cover in the right wheel arch and bolt it in place.
Connect the battery earth cable (-). Set the clock.
Program the radio stations.
Position the front wheel so that the marks made during removal align. Beforehand, lightly grease the centering seat of the rim and the conical surface of the wheel bolts with bearing grease. Do not grease or oil the wheel bolt threads. Fit the wheels. Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 90 N·m.
