Inspection of Suspension and Steering Linkage Components
PROCEDURE

1. Visually inspect the suspension and steering linkage components for deformation and mechanical damage. Check the condition of the seals, protective boots and rubber-metal bushings, and look carefully for signs of leakage.

2. Clean the lower surface of the steering knuckle of dirt. Ask an assistant to grasp the lower edge of the wheel and move it laterally. Visually check for play in the ball joints connecting the knuckle to the suspension control arm. If play is present, replace the worn joint.

3. Grasp the front and rear edges of the wheel, then push on the front edge and pull on the rear edge. If play is found in the steering linkage joints, check the condition of the idler arm and tie rod ends. Move to the other side of the vehicle and repeat the procedure, moving the opposite wheel.
4. For more detailed information on suspension component design, refer to the Suspension and Steering chapter.
