Tire rotation should be performed regularly in accordance with the vehicle maintenance schedule, and also whenever signs of uneven tread wear are found. When rotating the tires, the vehicle must be raised off the ground. Take this opportunity to also check the condition of the brake system components (see Brake System Inspection).
The authors of this Manual recommend rotating radial tires in accordance with the rotation patterns shown. Most models are equipped with tires with a non-directional tread; otherwise, note the difference in the rotation procedure. Directional tires can be easily identified by an arrow on the sidewall indicating the correct direction of wheel rotation. The set must include two tires with a right-hand rotation direction and two with a left-hand rotation direction.
A detailed description of the wheel change procedure is given in the Jacking and Towing section. Make sure the vehicle is securely supported in the raised position.
The best option is to raise the entire vehicle off the ground using a hoist, or jack up the vehicle and place it on safety stands positioned under the frame rails (under no circumstances use fewer than four safety stands to support the vehicle in the raised position!).
After rotation is complete, check the tire inflation pressure and adjust it to the specified values. Make sure the wheel nuts are secure (ideally, the wheel nuts should be tightened with a torque wrench and rechecked after 40 km [25 miles] of driving).
For more detailed information on wheels and tires, refer to the Suspension and Steering chapter.
