Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Level Check

~2min read

Maintaining the correct ATF level is one of the critical operating requirements for models equipped with an automatic transmission (AT). Low ATF level can cause the torque converter to slip, while excess fluid causes foaming, leaks, and may lead to transmission failure.

The ATF level must be checked on a vehicle parked on a level, horizontal surface after the engine has been running for one minute.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the dipstick located at the front of the transmission housing near the right side of the engine compartment on 4-cylinder models, or on the left side of the compartment on V6 models. The dipstick has a bright yellow ring-shaped handle. Wipe ATF off the blade with your fingers and assess its condition by feel.
2. Thoroughly wipe the blade with a clean lint-free cloth, then reinsert the dipstick into the guide tube and seat the cap firmly on the filler neck.

3. Вновь извлеките щуп из горловины и по величине смоченного участка лезвия определите

3. Remove the dipstick from the filler neck again and determine the ATF level in the transmission by the wetted portion of the blade. If necessary, adjust the level by adding fluid of the required type through a funnel. On 4-cylinder models, pour fluid directly into the neck of the dipstick guide tube. On V6 models, there is a separate filler hole; remove its plug first.

4. To raise the ATF level from the lower limit of the dipstick range to the upper limit, approximately 0.6 L of fluid is required. Add fluid in small portions over several steps, checking the level each time.
5. Check the condition of the ATF at the same time as the level. If the fluid wetting the end of the dipstick blade is dark red-brown or smells burnt, the ATF must be replaced (refer to Cooling System Service (Draining, Flushing and Filling)). If you are unsure about the condition of the transmission fluid, compare its color and smell with fresh ATF.
